Dear Miles Jones Families,
I welcome you back to the 2020-2021 school year! I hope you all had a wonderful summer. We have been very busy preparing for our virtual first semester here at Marvelous Miles Jones. We as a school have accomplished a great deal and made some very significant changes in the lives of all our students. There is so much to be proud of and I truly believe that our accomplishments were made based solely on the most important element: our students.
As we embark on another great year of teaching and learning, I’m very excited about another chapter we are about to write in our book of student achievement. During the 2020-21 school year, we will continue to build upon and refine our proven foundation of good work, honored traditions, and continued excellence in education. We will continue to:
Embrace New Opportunities. ……Unlock Potential… Continue To Inspire Excellence.
Everyone at Miles Jones plays an integral part to ensure that our school is a highly effective center of learning. We will continue to focus on our school community, which is a community united around its children. We recognize that in order to be successful during virtual learning, our children need support from home, school, and community. A strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. We ask that you guide and support your child’s virtual learning by ensuring that he/she:
- Attends school daily and log in on time, which is 9:00 AM, ready for the day’s learning experience
- Completes assignments given by teachers
- Read daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
- Shares virtual school experiences with you
- Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
- Knows that you expect him/her to succeed during our virtual learning semester
I anticipate a most successful year as my team and I support the academic, social, and emotional growth of your child at Virtual Miles Jones Elementary School. During the course of the year, it is my hope that we will work together to provide the students of Miles Jones with the best possible opportunities in preparing them to be world-class leaders. As Principal, my virtual office hours are from 8:00-4:30 PM Monday-Friday. Please feel free to schedule an appointment to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or ideas to help make this an outstanding year.
As a reminder, the first day of virtual learning is Tuesday, September 8, 2020. The school hours for K-2 students are 9:15-3:00 and students in grades 3-5 are 9: 15-3:30.
Mrs. Sonya Shaw, Principal

"RPS Direct" Emails from Superintendent Kamras
Dear #RPSStrong Family, I'd like to begin this evening by acknowledging the pain coursing through our community yet again in the wake of the decision yesterday by a Kentucky grand jury not to charge any of the officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor with homicide or manslaughter. Outcomes like this only tear at the unhealed wounds borne by so many within the RPS family. Please check on your colleagues, friends, and loved ones this evening. Please recognize that they may need extra time and space to process this latest injustice. And please be there for them, in whatever capacity they need. Thank you. I also want to take a moment tonight to express my profound gratitude to Karla Ramos (Manager, Office of Multicultural Affairs for the City of Richmond), Fernando Rodriguez (Communications Director, Richmond & Henrico Health Districts), Jannette Duhart (RPS Bilingual and EL Coordinator), and Yahusef Medina (RPS Bilingual Family Liaison) for a candid, insightful, and educational discussion on RPS Live! yesterday about the Hispanic/Latin-American/Latino/a/x community in Richmond and RPS. A big thank you as well to Carlos Hernandez, our interpreter for the evening. If you missed this episode, I strongly encourage you to check it out here. With great appreciation, Jason
Dear #RPS Strong Family, I'm reaching out with this special RPS Direct to share that an RPS employee has tested positive for COVID-19. The individual is a staff member at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School and was last at the school on 9-3. At the direction of the Richmond City Health Department (RCHD), we encourage anyone who was present at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School on the date listed above to monitor their symptoms and reach out to their primary care provider if they have any concerns. Individuals can also contact RCHD’s COVID-19 hotline at (804) 205-3501. Our number one priority remains the health and safety of our students, staff, and families. We will continue to work in close collaboration with the Richmond City Health District to ensure the well-being of the entire RPS community. If you have any questions, as always, please don't hesitate to contact me. Best, Jason
