Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us!

  • We couldn't do what we do without you!

Here is everything you need to know about getting started with volunteering with Richmond Public Schools!

Want to volunteer at a specific school:

    1. Visit your local school and ask about volunteer opportunities. The Main Office staff should be able to assist you.
    2. Complete a Volunteer Application and drop it off at the Main Office of the school where you want to volunteer.
    3. Please review the Background Check Information Sheet to see if you need to complete a background check for the volunteer opportunity for which you are interested.
    4. Once RPS staff submits your name and email address, you will be sent a background check link from Sterling Volunteers and HandsOn Greater Richmond.
    5. After we receive the clearance status of your background check, we will email you directly and cc the school's point-of-contact with the status and next steps based on the results.

Want to volunteer with RPS and don't have a school preference and would prefer not to have a background check:

    1. Please visit the HandsOn Greater Richmond website for all public volunteer opportunities. The large majority of these opportunities do not require a background check and are a great way to get to know schools from across the district.
    2. Register for an account on the HandsOn website.
    3. Review volunteer opportunities on the website and sign-up.
Please review the links below for additional information.

Want to have a group or team volunteer with RPS:

    1. Please complete the Group Volunteer Form. Please provide as many details as possible.
    2. Once we receive your request, we will follow-up with you within 72 business hours. Please allow 4 weeks to coordinate episodic group volunteer activities, if approved
    3. Please also look at current volunteer opportunities posted on the HandsOn website, as many can accommodate groups and teams.
Please review the links below for additional information.

    * Volunteers pay for their Sterling Volunteers background check.  This background check can shared with other organizations locally and nationally that use Sterling Volunteers. If you are unable to pay for your background check please email the Coordinator of Community Partnerships.  Additional information on background checks can be found in the Volunteer Handbook.
