Dr. Carmen Y. Ward

Carmen Y. Ward, Ph.D. - a native of Richmond, Virginia, began her music career in Richmond Public Schools where she studied with Maurice Williams, Royal Singleton, and Johnny Peyton. She continued her study of music at the University of Richmond (B.M.) and Catholic University of America (M.M.) in Washington, D. C. Dr. Ward returned to Virginia and became the choral director at Petersburg High School, Petersburg, Virginia, for five years. In 1987, she became the choral director for Armstrong High School where she remained for 15 years. During that time, she also served as the choral director for Franklin Military Academy and Binford Model Middle School. Dr. Ward has hosted District Chorus, served as adjudicator for the National Federation of Music Clubs, ACT-SO, and Prince Williams County Choral Music Department. In May of 2012, Dr. Ward earned her doctorate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Educational Leadership. Dr. Ward’s employment in RPS has also included serving as a school counselor for Boushall Middle School, Huguenot High School and an assistant principal for John Marshall High School. Currently, she is Director of the School Counseling Department at Armstrong High School. Dr. Ward still continues to provide opportunities for RPS students to experience and develop an appreciation for the cultural arts by promoting and arranging for students to attend live performances both on-campus and off-campus.
