  • RPS Launches Largest Solar Power System at any School Division in Virginia

    Last Friday, in a press conference with Governor Ralph Northam, school officials, and partner solar companies, RPS celebrated the largest solar energy system at a K-12 school division in Virginia to date. “When we look at our future, we know that we need to develop our renewable energy sources and reduce our carbon footprint,” said Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. “I’m proud of Richmond Public Schools for leading the way—you are setting a great example for other schools, and for your students.”

  • RPS Celebrates Official Dedication of Barack Obama Elementary School

    On Friday, Richmond Public Schools celebrated the official dedication of Barack Obama Elementary School with special guest, John B. King Jr., 10th US Secretary of Education for President Barack Obama. “I am so pleased to join Richmond students, educators, families, and community members in celebrating the renaming of this school, in honor of America’s first Black president,” said Secretary King. “Having served in President Barack Obama’s Cabinet, it is a special privilege to be part of the celebration. Representation matters, and I am so encouraged that students of color will be able to see themselves and their potential for greatness reflected whenever they tell people where they attend school in Richmond.”

  • Prince-Albert Hudson, IV from Barack Obama Elementary School Wins RPS 2020 Spelling Bee

    Congratulations to Prince-Albert Hudson, IV, the Richmond Public Schools 2020 Spelling Bee Champion. The annual division-wide spelling bee was held on February 5 at Mary Munford Elementary School. Cheered on by family and friends, thirty-two students representing RPS elementary and middle schools throughout the division competed at this year’s event after winning their school-based spelling bees.

  • RPS and the City of Richmond Fulfill Promise to Provide Out-of-School Time Opportunities for Elementary and Middle School Students

    All Richmond Public Schools’ middle school and elementary students now have access to out-of-school time opportunities, thanks to a collaboration between RPS, the City of Richmond, and community partners, including NextUp.

    Richmond Public Schools (RPS) announced the launch of the Secondary Success Center, a program designed to help former RPS students complete their high school diploma or earn a GED.

  • RPS Awarded Four Electric Buses from Dominion Energy

    Richmond Public Schools (RPS) is set to receive four electric school buses as part of Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric school bus deployment. Earlier this school year, RPS applied for the first phase of Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric school bus initiative. This initial phase aims to have 50 buses fully operational within their service territory by the end of 2020.

    The PASS docket, a new RPS and Richmond Juvenile Court initiative, aims to lower chronic absenteeism across the division by connecting students and families with wraparound supports while enforcing school attendance through the legal system.
