SCHOLAR ATHLETE NIGHT AT THE DIAMOND -- 2017-2018
This is the 6th Annual Scholar Athlete of the Year award for RPS Middle and High School Athletes held each year at The Diamond.
From the year-long Scholar Athletes of the Month, a male and female high school scholar athlete were chosen.
This years Male Scholar Athlete of the Year was Jarec Brown from George Wythe High School, a senior with a 3.28 GPA. Jarec has committed to play at Eastern Arizona College in the Fall of 2018.
The Female Scholar Athlete of the Year was Shavae' Ward (The overall Valedictorian for RPS) from Open High School (Virginia) with a 4.92 GPA. Shavae' will attend Old Dominion University in the Fall and plans to major in nursing.
She just graduated with an associate's degree from Reynolds Community College in general studies and she just earned "summa cum laude" distinction.

FEMALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - HUGUENOT HIGH SCHOOL
Athlete - Jordan Baker

Sport: Golf
Meet Jordan: Jordan is in her first year as a member of the Huguenot High School Golf Team. This is her first year participating in sports at Huguenot High School. This year was special for our Golf Team as Jordan was the first female to compete on the golf team with Coach Farquharson. Jordan Jordan was able to learn the game and strategies to being a better golfer.
Jordan is an Honor Roll student that attends Richmond Community High School. She also works with the Mayor's Youth Academy during the summer.MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL

Athletic Achievements: Jordan is the perfect example of a student athlete. He is a senior honor student here at JM, who volunteers several hours each week. He is a senior starter on the football team, where he has been an instrumental contributor to the team. He has organized carwash fundraisers for his teams and is major contributor on the track team as a all conference, all region and all state performer.

Athletic Achievements: 2 Years on TJ Volleyball team. Had 2 aces against Petersburg. Is the teams outside hitter.

Athlete - Marlin Osborne

Athletic Achievements: Marlin is a 3 year varsity starter for the Wildcats’ football team. Marlin serves as one of team Captains and leads by example on and off the field of play. He is involved in community service activities and represent Armstrong High School very well.
Academic Achievements: Marlin is a leader in the class room as he attends Richmond Community High School. He has been involved in several community service activities and school organizations. Athlete - Majia Singleton

GPA: 3.5
Sport: Cheerleader
Achievements: Majia has participated in Junior Varsity Cheer, Varsity Cheer, Indoor and Outdoor Track all four years of her high school career. She has been captain for track and field for three years and captain for cheerleading for two years. She has a 3.5 GPA, is in the National Technical Honor Society, and plans to go to Virginia State University and major in Biology to eventually become a physical therapist.

Athlete - Jarec Brown
Grade: 12th

Sport: Basketball
Athletics: Jarec Brown is a senior and a member of the George Wythe Bulldog Boys’ Varsity Basketball team. He led the team with 14 points in this week’s 69-11 win over the Cavaliers of Clover Hill.
Activities and Community: When Jarec is not making an impact on the court, he is doing so the community and in the classroom. Jarec strives to support his school and community by donating his time to community service. Jarec participated in the Great Start Breakfast initiative, the 24/7 Tobacco Free Campaign, the YOVASO Driving Seat Belt Awareness Campaign, the Annual Canned Good Drive, as well as monthly litter pick-up. Jarec’s extra-curricular activities, do not hinder his drive in the classroom. He is an honor roll student with a 3.2 GPA. FEMALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL
Athlete - Audrya Jiggetts
Grade: 10th
GPA: 3.375
Sport: Basketball
Achievements: Audrya is a sophomore member of our varsity girls volleyball, basketball, and softball teams. She is a very dedicated young lady on and off the court and field. She is an asset to our building and athletic department. Her ability to stay on task and follow instructions is a breath of fresh air. She is key to our basketball team this season. Audrya scored 12 points and had 7 assists in our win against Charles City High School.

Athlete - Corvell Poag
Grade: 11th
GPA: 3.825
Sport: WrestlingAthletic Achievements: Corvell is a 2 year varsity wrestler for the Wildcats’ Wrestling team. He currently has a 4-2 record, and he pinned his last opponent in 9 seconds. He placed 7th in the Region last year, was an alternate for the state tournament as a first year wrestler.
Academic Achievements: Corvell has a 3.825 GPA and is a National Honor Society member. He is also a member of the Armstrong Leadership Program. He volunteers with the Armstrong Recycling Program.

FEMALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL
ATHLETE: NIA TUCKER
Athletic Achievements: All 4 years on Track Team. Had a PR in the 55 hurdles, Triple Jump and Long Jump over the last few meets. RPS meet #3 she came in 2nd place in 55m hurdles, and 1st place in the high jump, and 2nd place in long jump. Also a 4 year cheerleader for TJHS!
Academic/Volunteer Achievements: Member of National Honor Society, In the TJ International Baccalaureate program.

MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - HUGUENOT HIGH SCHOOL
Athlete: Tailey Tofoi
Grade: 11 GPA: 3.2
Sport: Track
Tailey Tofoi has been a member of the Falcons Indoor and Outdoor Track Team for 3 years. He has also been a member of the JV and Varsity Football team for 2 years. Tailey has been a standout track athlete since his Freshman year. During his Freshman year, he qualified for Nationals during his Indoor and Outdoor Seasons.
He continued that with a strong start to his Sophomore season. He competed in Conference 20 , Region and State 4A Indoor and Outdoor Track Meets. He was also a member of the Boys 4x400 Meter Relay Outdoor Team that set a school record and competed in the Region 4A Track Meet for the 1st time in over 8 years. He also competed in the Long Jump, 55m, 200m at the Region and State Level.
Tailey has gotten off to another great start. Although Indoor Season is short, he is .02 off the needed time for 4A State Qualifying s in the 55m. He will continue to improve and get better. HHS looks for great things from Tailey as he becomes one of the great track standouts.
He is also an Honor Roll student at HHS. He also enjoys making and fixing things and playing basketball in his free time. He plans to attend college and major in Engineering and has hopes of running track at the collegiate level.

FEMALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - ARMSTRONG HIGH SCHOOL
ATHLETE: TAITONIA OWENS
Athletic Achievements: Taitonia is a 3 year varsity basketball player for Armstrong High School. She let the team to victories over John Marshall and Henrico with a 19 point average for the week. She also scored 21 points in a close loss to Atlee. She is currently the leading scorer for the Lady Wildcats.
Academic Achievements: Taitonia has a 4.18 GPA. She excelled in Economics and Personal Finance and Honors Chemistry last year. She is a member of the National Honor Society at Armstrong High School and volunteers for the Armstrong Athletics Department.

MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - ARMSTRONG HIGH SCHOOL
Athlete: Solomon Harris
Athletic Achievements: Solomon Harris is a 1st year Wrestler for Armstrong. He has learned the sport of wrestling at a rapid pace and placed 5th in Region 3B Tournament last week. He ended the season with a 15 – 13 record and is an alternate for the Class 3 state championship tournament. Solomon has also lettered in Volleyball and Tennis for two years.
Academic Achievements: Solomon attends Richmond Community High School where he takes a mixture of AP and Honors courses. He is a model student and citizen as he performs community service for his school. He had an outstanding 4.5 GPA for the 1st Semester.
