RPS SCHOOL YEAR 2020 - 2021 DRAFT CALENDAR
- RPS is currently seeking feedback on the division's draft calendar for the 2020-2021 school year.
- Below you will find the proposed calendar with an outline of similarities to the current school year calendar and changes that RPS is proposing to implement.
- There is a feedback form at the bottom of the page to let us know your thoughts.
- The feedback form will be open from November 11th to December 18th.
- A revised calendar, based on feedback, will be presented to the School Board on January 6th, 2020.
Things that are the same as the 2019-2020 Calendar:
|Starting after Labor Day|
|While the General Assembly passed legislation allowing school divisions to start before Labor Day, for the 2020-21 school year, in alignment with neighboring divisions, we propose starting after Labor Day. Note that this will mean a shorter summer break if we move to before Labor Day in 2021-22.|
|Thanksgiving break remains the same (3 days off for designated school-based staff, 2 days off for 12-month employees).|
|Winter break is aligned to neighboring divisions (2 full weeks for designated school-based staff; see the right-side column for 12-month employee consideration).|
|Spring break is aligned to neighboring divisions (1 full week for designated school-based staff, inclusive of Easter Monday; see the right-side column for 12-month employee consideration).|
|The number of preservice days remains the same (3 days for division-level professional learning, 3 days for school-led professional learning, 2 days for teacher preparation).|
|New Teacher Academy Days|
|The number of days for New Teacher Academy (prior to preservice) remains the same (2 days).|
|Election Day & VEA Lobby Day|
|All staff members are given off for Election Day (except for essential personnel). This year we opted to give off Election Day rather than VEA Lobby Day. Should we continue this practice?|
Things we propose to change for the 2020-2021 Calendar:
|Within School-Year Division-Level Professional Learning Days|
|Adjusted division-level PD days in October and January to not align with the holiday weekend (to support increased attendance).|
|Early Release Days|
|Added 2 additional early release days (in October and January) for school-led professional learning.|
|Parent Teacher Conferences|
|Doubled amount of time for parent teacher conferences (2 early release days, twice a year).|
|Winter Break for 12-Month Employees|
|Based on how the holidays fall, 12-month employees have off the full second week of break, plus 2 days in first week (this is 1 more day than last year).|
|This year, designated school-based staff are off on Easter Monday off because it’s part of spring break. We propose allowing 12-month employees to swap Friday (which is a day off per Board policy) for Monday, if desired.|
