Esperanza Rising Read Aloud
Join RPS' Read-Aloud series by doing a read-aloud at home of some of our favorite books! After starting with Wishtree, which is a great story for all ages, we have a short younger grades story called Esperanza Rising (or Esperanza Renace in Spanish) by author Pam Muñoz Ryan. This book, available in both languages, is a Pura Belpré Honor Book, an award named after the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library that is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
Read-Alouds are a great way to engage all types of readers, and they can be especially useful for struggling readers or students who are learning English. Because many reading skills are transferable, students who learn to read in both languages develop stronger literacy gains. The more lessons they receive in phonological awareness, vocabulary memorization, and other skills in both languages, the faster they’ll learn to read. Check out the readings below in English and Spanish!
