The Governor's STEM Academy at Richmond Technical Center
The Governor’s STEM Academy at RTC is a part-time four-year program for rising 9th graders which offers Richmond Public School students a rigorous academic and technical program of study in two career pathways:
- Engineering & Technology
- Therapeutic Services
The pathways are a combination of academic and technical study that integrates classroom and real-world learning. Academy coursework, teacher professional development, academic support, career and college development activities, along with parent and community involvement create a STEM community of learners.
The Academy raises student aspirations and attracts more students to postsecondary education in preparation for technical careers, especially targeting students who might otherwise have settled for a curriculum that did not prepare them well for postsecondary education or work.
Students who successfully complete the academy will receive at least eight high school credits towards graduation, diploma seals of achievement, industry credentials for employment, opportunities to earn college credit, as well as opportunities to participate in work based learning (such as internships, clinicals, job shadowing, apprenticeships, etc.).
Application and Selection
The RPS Governor’s CTE Academy for STEM reserves 45 slots each year for rising 9th grade students who will attend part-time for the four-year program while attending their assigned home school for core instruction. The Academy follows the Speciality School Application timeline; applications must be completed via Enroll RPS no later than December 1, 2020 at 4:30 PM.
The Academy offers a specialized curriculum for highly engaged and motivated students. For a student to be successful in this program, they must be a consistent, dedicated learner. Therefore, applicants and parents are required to commit to an admissions agreement.
A committee of staff members of the Academy review and evaluate all components of the application. Students are selected based on demonstrated interest in the goals of the academy as well as academic strength. Evaluation criteria includes:
- Transcript (grades and rigor; recommend current enrollment in Algebra I)
- Math & Science Teacher Recommendations
- SOL Report
- Career Interest Assessment (e.g., O*net Interest Profiler)
