Principal's Message

  • Principal Trotter

    Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to open this letter by saying WE MISS YOU! Since March 13th our halls and classrooms have been absent without your bright faces and engaging conversations throughout our building.  We hope that during this time of uncertainty you’re taking care of yourself as well as your families.

This year as you know will begin much differently than others, we’ll open “Virtually” with students working from home through various instructional platforms. Our district motto from our superintendent is Re-Open with Love and that’s exactly what we want to ensure takes place with each of our Richmond Alternative School students.

Over the next week you’ll receive your class schedules to be ready for our September 8th opening. On March 13th the district launched our RPS@Home virtual modules students had to complete for course credit, these modules were in conjunction with the core classes students were enrolled in during the school year. Parents, if your child did not complete those modules/courses he/she will need to complete these prior to moving into the next core class. As this will be noted on their student schedules.

For example ( if a student was in English 9 and the modules (RPS@Home) was not completed then that student will complete English 9 prior to moving to English 10)  should you have any questions regarding where your child is with these modules or Edgenuity please contact us at the number below.

New students who need to participate in New Student Orientation you’ll also receive a call from our Director of Orientation next week to schedule your virtual orientation.

As mentioned previously our FIRST day of school is September 8th – each Richmond Alternative School student should have a laptop or Chromebook to begin instruction. If you’ve not received a device or need a hotspot please email at or send a text with your child’s name to 804-774-8577. We’re working diligently to make sure each student has a necessary device to be ready for day one.

Please follow our social media page (Facebook) at Richmond Public Schools and Richmond Alternative School as we post important information daily relating to our campus and district. Staying in contact with each of you is of most importance during this time.

In closing, as we navigate during this virtual world together we’ll continue to support one another to make sure you’re child has the tools to be successful our only ask is that you continue to remain in contact with us each step of the way. We can be reached at

"RPS Direct" Emails from Superintendent Kamras

  • RPS Direct Update - November 24, 2020 (PM)

Dear #RPSStrong Family, Well, I said "flood" my inbox with shout outs – and flood you did! Thank you for sharing more than 100 beautiful messages of appreciation for our teachers, administrators, support staff, partners, families, and students. (I encourage you to read all the way to the end, as the last one is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.) I can't express how much these words of support, encouragement, and gratitude mean to the recipients. On behalf of RPS, thank you to everyone who wrote in! Before I sign off for the holiday break, I also want to express my profound gratitude to our principals, teachers, and support staff. Since March 13, you have delivered more than 2 million meals, purchased and distributed over 20,000 Chromebooks, facilitated more than 30,000 community circles, and literally reinvented what it means to be a teacher – all with boundless love for our students and families. In short, you have demonstrated that RPS is capable of doing truly extraordinary things. This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for you. With the deepest appreciation, Jason

  • RPS Direct Update - November 24, 2020

Dear #RPS Strong Family, I'm reaching out with this special RPS Direct to share that three staff members and two students have tested positive for COVID-19. The staff are from the Belt Boulevard Transportation Office (last there on 11-23), Armstrong High School (last there on 11-17), and the Academic Office in City Hall (last there in October). The student cases are from Ginter Park Elementary School and Thomas Jefferson High School (neither has been on campus this year). We encourage everyone to monitor their symptoms and reach out to their primary care provider if they have any concerns. They can also contact the Richmond City Health District’s COVID-19 hotline at (804) 205-3501. Our number one priority remains the health and safety of our students, staff, and families. We will continue to work in close collaboration with RCHD to ensure the well-being of the entire RPS community. If you have any questions, as always, please don't hesitate to contact me. Best, Jason
