Dreams4RPS Priority 2

Skilled and Supported Staff

Every child deserves to have a highly-qualified teacher from the start of the school year until the end of the year. Our goal is twofold: fill every teacher vacancy with a well compensated and talented teacher who leads their classrooms with love while holding students to high expectations and fully support every staff member during their tenure at RPS, from the hiring process through retirement.

RVA Men Teach is a program dedicated to improving students’ academic, social, and professional outcomes by recruiting, retaining, and professionally developing male educators of color. A committee of veteran Richmond Public Schools Male Educators of Color provide mentorship and direction for the initiative. RVA Men Teach includes licensure and certification support, expansive partnerships, and regular celebrations for the recognition of excellence.

RPS is working to become an anti-racist school division by creating a school system wherer all individuals feel welcome, loved, and appreciated for the many intellectual, cultural, and social gifts they possess. As a school division, we must hold all staff accountable for anti-racist and anti-bias views and actions and create opportunities for staff to continue to learn and grow. The anti-racist educator series consist of professional development opportunities, panel discussions, book clubs, classroom conversations, and self examination about anti-racist pedagogy and practices in our school system.

Richmond Teacher Residency (RTR) is a highly selective graduate teacher residency program that equips individuals of all ages to make an immediate impact in our schools. The program strives to cultivate a pipeline of extraordinary teachers who take seriously the job of leveling the playing field and closing the achievement gap for our students. Residents earn a Master of Education or a Master of Teaching degree from VCU upon completion of the program.
