Program Overview

The school counselors of Richmond Public Schools believe that:

  • Each student has dignity and worth regardless of their individual differences.

  • All students have the ability to meet their academic potential and become career and/or college ready by graduation.

  • Each student’s differences and special needs are considered in the planning, implementation and delivery of the comprehensive school counseling program.

  • School counselors must be collaborators with and advocates for the students and families that they serve, helping to ensure access to an academically challenging learning environment that inspires and engages all students.

  • Student achievement is enhanced by participation in a comprehensive school counseling program.

  • All students have access to a (full-time, state certified, Master’s degree level) professional school counselor.

  • Data is necessary to continually evaluate and implement the most successful and appropriate interventions for the students in our schools.

  • Adherence to the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors allows staff to make decisions based on best school counseling practices.

The mission of the Richmond Public Schools Comprehensive School Counseling Program is to prepare culturally competent, ethical, and skilled school counseling professionals to meet the growing needs of students. Our program prepares professional school counselors to deliver comprehensive programs that promote success for all students in the areas of academic, career and college readiness, and social-emotional development. Through advocacy, collaboration and teamwork, individual and group counseling, use of data and technology, school counselors support, promote, and enhance student achievement as agents of change and leaders.

Our Vision

Each student in Richmond City Public Schools will achieve his or her maximum potential as a productive citizen of the 21st century. Upon graduation, all students will meet their academic potential to become career and/or college ready.   In partnership with the community, the counseling program will help ensure access to an academically challenging learning environment and help students to understand that individual differences are vital to becoming:

  • Effective communicators and collaborators

  • Globally aware, independent, responsible learners and citizens

  • Critical and creative thinkers, innovators and problem solvers
