The Center for Gifted Education (CFGE) at the College of William and Mary is pleased to announce a two-week residential camp for rising 7th and 8th-grade students from July 16-29, 2023.  With a donation from Petters Family Foundation, the Center has designed a camp, Camp Launch, specifically to meet the needs of high-ability, low-income learners. The camp will focus on developing students’ science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and writing abilities. In addition, a “personal development” component will aid campers in self-understanding, interpersonal relationships, and academic and career planning. This component is designed to foster cultural awareness and to encourage students’ resilience as they face obstacles in reaching their academic and career goals. Eligible students will be from districts within a 2-hour radius of the Center for Gifted Education.

RPS has been part of the Camp Launch program since its inception in 2012.  It has been a privilege to work with this program and expose our scholars to new experiences and enriching college pathways.

Camp Launch is pleased to offer Richmond Public Schools the opportunity to nominate up to twelve 7th-grade students and four 8th-grade students who are eligible according to camp academic and income criteria before the district deadline, February 10, 2023.  Our district will provide transportation to the camp on July 16 and from the camp on July 29 to those campers who request transportation.  Each slot represents a $4000 scholarship for the camper to attend gratis.  We usually send more students than slots, picking up unused slots from other districts. I will be glad to complete the data needed for the nominee application.  Work samples/projects are welcome.

The students who participate in this program will have a unique opportunity to learn from world-renowned curricula developed by the CFGE and modified to suit their needs, and to interact with similar high-potential peers, in a historic college setting. The CFGE is exceptionally qualified to create and carry out Camp Launch, with 25 years of successful pre-collegiate enrichment programs. All the services in Camp Launch will be free for students, and campers will be invited to return to Camp Launch through 10th grade.   Camp Launch will set campers on a trajectory for continued success in school and in their communities. RPS will have returning campers.
