2024-2025 Preschool Enrollment Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to re-enroll my child if he/she is a current RPS preschool student?
Current RPS preschool families eligible for the 2024-2025 school year have been provided an “intent to return form” for re-enrollment. If you have not received this form, please contact us at

Is my child eligible for preschool?
To be eligible for preschool, your child must meet the following requirements:

  • The child must live in the City of Richmond

  • The child must be 3 or 4 years old by September 30, 2024

  • Eligibility is determined based on the family’s income and/or at-risk factors. Please complete an online preschool application and submit all the required documents to determine your child’s eligibility

Where will my child attend school?
Students are enrolled in their zone preschool classrooms. To find your zone preschool, please visit the school locator. If your zone school is full at the time of enrollment, the student will be placed at the next available/closest location. Please visit our website for a list of preschool locations.

When will I know if my child was accepted?
Families can expect to receive an email notification within four weeks of submitting their application along with all required documents. Eligible families will find instructions in the email regarding the next steps needed to complete the preschool enrollment process.

Is there any cost for preschool?
Preschool is provided at no cost to eligible families, with breakfast and lunch provided for all enrolled students.

When does preschool start?
RPS Preschool follows the Richmond Public Schools calendar. The first day of school for the school year 2024-25 will be August 19, 2024. For more information, refer to the RPS Division Calendar.

Is preschool a half-day or full-day program?
RPS preschool is a full-day program, Monday through Friday from 7:45 am to 2:15 pm. The times may vary at some locations.

Does preschool provide transportation?

Do I need to buy school supplies?
RPS Preschool will provide students with all the materials needed (books, journals, pencils, crayons, playdough, scissors, etc.).

Can my child with disabilities attend preschool?
Yes, parents/guardians of children with special needs are encouraged to apply.

Does my child need to be potty trained to attend preschool?
No, our teachers and staff work with parents to support children with toilet learning.

Can I apply for preschool if I do not have a permanent address?
Yes, families in transition, including students experiencing housing instability, houselessness and living with kinship caregivers/non-guardian family members, can call (804) 780-6288 or email for additional support.

When is the deadline for preschool enrollment?
Preschool spots are typically filled up during the spring and summer. We strongly recommend that families apply early to secure a place at their designated school zone. The Head Start program accepts applications year-round, with new students being placed on their waitlist until space becomes available.
