Early College Academy
High School Student. College Grad in the Making.
What is the Early College Academy?
The Early College Academy (ECA) is a partnership between RPS and Reynolds Community College that lets students earn college credits - up to an Associate’s Degree - before graduating high school. ECA is a two-year program for 11th and 12th graders. Students spend mornings at Reynolds’ Downtown Campus taking college classes, then return to their high school in the afternoons for other courses, sports, clubs, and activities.
Who can apply?
Any RPS 10th grader can apply through their school counselor. To qualify, you’ll need at least a 3.3 GPA and a strong interest in earning your Associate’s Degree while still in high school. Admission starts with an initial acceptance and becomes official once you complete placement testing required by the Virginia Community College System.
Why choose ECA?
Joining ECA gives students:
- A head start on college – earn credits that transfer to a 4-year university or help launch your career.
-
Challenging classes – push yourself with real college coursework.
-
Support & community – learn alongside a group of peers (a “cohort”) and build strong friendships.
-
Career coaching – Reynolds staff help you explore career paths starting in 10th grade.
-
Balance – stay connected to your high school through athletics, arts, clubs, and service opportunities.
What makes a successful ECA student?
-
Takes tough courses early on and is ready for the challenge of college-level work.
-
Manages time well, studying evenings and weekends when needed.
-
Is mature, motivated, and ready to take charge of their own learning.
-
Gets involved at their high school in the afternoons through sports, music, art, clubs, or service.
