BROTHERS UNITED MENTORING PROGRAM
Brothers United is Richmond Public Schools first district-wide initiative that pairs young men of color with mentors of color to build relationships and leverage partnerships within the Richmond, VA community. Aligned to our strategic plan, Dreams4RPS, Brothers United is one way in which Richmond Public Schools is developing deep partnerships with families and community.
WHY? Data shows that boys and young men of color, regardless of socio-economic background, are disproportionately at-risk throughout the journey from their youngest years to college and career. Large disparities remain in reading proficiency, with 86% of black boys and 82% of Hispanic boys reading below proficiency levels by the fourth grade – compared to 58% of white boys reading below proficiency levels. Additionally, the disproportionate number of black and Hispanic young men who are unemployed or involved in the criminal justice system is pervasive. Brothers United is committed to ensuring every young man of color meets their full potential through intentional mentorship with other males of color.
WHEN? In addition to weekly 1-to-1 sessions, each month mentees will have the opportunity to participate in real-life student experiences alongside their mentors, formally and informally, in the Richmond community. All student experiences will be aimed at inspiring and motivating students to do well in school, exposing students to various college and career options, encouraging students towards healthy and positive lives, and helping students develop viable life plans and make good decisions.
HOW CAN I HELP? The Richmond community is rich in existing leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, activists and citizens who are making an impact on the journey of young boys of color to young men of color! If you are interested in becoming a mentor or sponsoring a student experience, we are looking for continued partnerships with faith-based, business, non-profit and civil rights communities to expand the mission of Brothers United.
