Performance Learning Center (PLC)The Communities In Schools' (CIS) Performance Learning Center (PLC) is a small, non-traditional high school geared towards students who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting.
The PLC incorporates CIS’s caring philosophy and approach that combines strong personal relationships between staff and students with an intense focus on academic achievement. A Services Coordinator, who is a CIS staff member, helps students with non-academic issues that may affect their ability to learn. The PLC serves high school students who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting and who typically lack interest in a traditional school environment and are seeking another learning option. Candidates for the PLC program are students who: experience poor academic achievement; are chronically late or absent from school; are at high risk of dropping out of school.
Students seeking to complete their high school degree at PLC should get a referral from the last high school they attended. The referral should include: SOL scores, transcripts, report cards, and any other documentation pertaining to high school credits already earned. Adults seeking to complete their diploma requirements must be residents of the City of Richmond and will need to provide an official transcript from the last high school attended. RTC does not award the high school diploma: rather, students receive diplomas from their zoned comprehensive high school.
All students referred to the PLC program must apply for admission and interview with a selection panel. During the selection process, students will be given the Basic Assessment Skills Inventory (BASI) test. Students must perform at the 8th grade reading level on the BASI test to be admitted to the program. All applications must be sent to the PLC office. The PLC-RTC Academic Coordinator will contact each student regarding the application process.
