The Midwest Clinic in Chicago

  • For the past seven years, the Richmond Community High School (RCHS) Music Department has taken an annual trip to Chicago, Illinois in order to attend the Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra and Music Conference, the world’s largest conference for music education. This week-long event offers not only the students, but also the band directors who attend, an opportunity to experience music from a new perspective.

RCHS’s music director, Mr. Gregory McCallum, Sr., has been the driving force behind our music program’s attendance. He is passionate about instructing and tirelessly promotes his students’ craft. Some of his accolades include being selected the 2011 Richmond Public Schools “Teacher of the Year,” a 2014 R.E.B. award winner for Teaching Excellence, and one of “50 Directors Who Make A Difference” in the December 2013 issue of School Band and Orchestra Magazine.

Not only is Mr. McCallum well-accomplished, but his students--specifically, those who have attended Midwest Clinic--have gone on to study music at the Berklee College of Music, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Howard University, among others.
