Principal's (New) Message
As we are settling into 2021, I would like to begin by greeting everyone with a heartfelt Happy New Year. This is a most welcome year that is full of hope and new opportunities to chart a different course for a world that is desperately in need of change.
This pandemic has brought out the best in our Blackwell Preschool staff as we have rolled up our sleeves to meet every challenge with grace, love, and accountability. We listen better, we support each other, and we love our students and families. Blackwell Preschool Center’s faculty and staff have not only risen to every occasion to meet the needs of our students, they have done so with attention to individual differences, compassion, and partnership.
Your partnership is essential. We appreciate your willingness to welcome us into your homes each day. We simply could not do this work without you and we are deeply grateful for your support. Now that all of our children have Chromebooks and second semester learning materials, we are excited about the potential for reaching our learning goals for the year.
In Virginia, our youngest learners work towards meeting developing knowledge and skills essential for success in kindergarten (and beyond!) that are captured in a document called Virginia’s Foundation Blocks for Early Learning. I encourage you to click on the link to download a copy of the document.
Throughout Richmond Public Schools, preschool students are working to master the following literacy skills by the end of the school year:
- Name Writing
- Alphabet Knowledge
- Upper Case Letter Recognition
- Lower Case Letter Recognition
- Letter Sounds
- Beginning Sounds Awareness
- Rhyme Awareness
We ask that you support your children in developing these skills outside of school hours. Your child’s teacher can provide resources to help you with this development. We are fortunate that our Creative Curriculum materials provide weekly family activities to support what your child is learning in class. We thank you for your partnership in working to ensure your child is ready for kindergarten.
We are not yet certain how the school year will end. Governor Northam recently announced that students may return to face to face learning as early as March 2021. Superintendent Kamras and the School Board are working to develop a plan for our students. Please stay tuned for additional information.
Please feel free to contact me with your questions and suggestions. I invite you to attend our monthly Town Hall Meetings, as well as my weekly office hours. I am here to support you in any way I can.
Thank you for being an important part of our Blackwell Preschool Family. We treasure your children and appreciate all that you have done to make this unusual school year so very special.
