About the Media Center

  • Policies and Procedures:

The media center is open from 9am – 3:45pm daily.   Students will be checking in/out books during their scheduled library class; they may also come from 11:45-1:00 to check out books.   All previously checked out books must be returned before any new books are checked out.

1st and 2nd grade students may check out one book at a time.   I ask that the book be read 10 times before they return it to the library.   Please ask questions (who/what/where/when/why) about the book while you are reading the book with your child.

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students may check out 2 books at a time.   I’m asking the students to check out one fiction and one nonfiction book each time; please help them write out 6 sentences about each book.   For fiction books, please write 2 sentences about the beginning, middle, and end of the story.   For nonfiction books, please write 6 facts you learned.

We are participating in “Book It” this year – if your child reads 20 minutes/day, every day of the month, they will earn a certificate that’s good for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut – if everyone in their class does this every month (October through March) the entire class will receive a pizza party.

Our 4th and 5th grade students will be a part of the “Redskins Read” program this year.   The classroom that reads the most will be receiving some VERY cool Redskins stuff – I’d like some of this for myself!

In October, December, February, and April we will be having a student book exchange.   Each student is encouraged to bring in a slightly used paperback book of their own . . . . this will be exchanged for another slightly used paperback book that belonged to someone else.   Ms. Cottman and I will be sending home, advertising on Class Dojo, paperwork that will give you details about the book exchange.

The media center database is completely online and you can access it from school or your home.  The website is:

    http://www.destiny.rvaschools.net

Once you’re at that webpage choose GW Carver Elementary School . . .  you can see what books we have on any subject and you can see if the books are here or checked out.

On the left side of the screen you can click on “Destiny Discover” (it’s their latest software for finding books) or on “Destiny Quest” (this software will eventually be stopped but I really like it and it’s extremely kid friendly).   Please let me know if you’d like help searching.
