College Preparation

Take time to learn the requirements for graduation:

There are new requirements for 9th grade students entering high school in 2016-2017 and beyond. The more you know the better you will be with selecting and tracking your academic courses.

Take the PSAT

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test will give you an up close and personal preview to the SAT, which is one test used for college admissions. The PSAT is offered to all 10th and 11th grade students. Your scores on the test give more information about your potential for Advanced Placement courses. Juniors should take the SAT for the first time in the spring (note: after taking the PSAT in the fall). The PSAT test will be offered on Wednesday, October 11, 2017.

Take Dual Enrollment Courses

Dual Enrollment gives 11th and 12th grade students an opportunity to meet the requirements for high school graduation while simultaneously earning college credit. Dual credit opportunities are available at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Students must meet VPT testing requirements and submit the required forms. See your school counselor if you are interested in Dual Enrollment.

Take Time to Volunteer

Don't forget that community service. Make sure you start early in your high school career and keep track of your time. Try to find a volunteer opportunity in your field of interest. It also looks great during the college admissions process.

Take Time to Research Colleges

What are the requirements to get into college? How far do you want to travel from home? Do you want a large or small college or university? What schools have your major? What careers are you interested in? These questions can be answered by taking a career interest inventory, a college tour, speaking with the admissions office of a prospective college/university or doing research on the internet/at the library.
