Principal's Message

  • Principals Photo Dear Lion’s Den Parents, Students, and Community Members,

Thank you for visiting our website to learn more about our school community, including our amazing students, our loving staff, our supporting families  and partners, and our exciting programs!

As your principal, I am honored to lead our school community to help provide an exciting and rigorous educational experience for our students. Our team is committed to ensuring that our students receive the best possible support to learn and grow.

This year’s theme is “Holton has D.R.E.A.M.S.” - Determined, Resilient, Encouraged, & Authentically Motivated Students and Staff! My vision is to provide students with an educational experience that inspires and motivates them to be lifelong learners and caring contributors to the world around them. Our goal is to provide a nurturing environment that meets the individual needs of each student, both academically and socially.

As you may know, Linwood Holton Elementary is special for a number of reason, but one of the reasons is YOU. Be sure and find ways to engage yourself in school life – your child will notice and respond. There are numerous opportunities for parental involvement. Together, we can make a positive difference. A strong partnership between home and school fosters greater success for our children. Families, teachers, support staff, community members, and administration all play a part in helping our students develop academically, socially, and emotionally. May we all be present for the joy of learning, the satisfaction of a job well done, and the comfort that comes from belonging to a community.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out by phone (804-228-5310) or email ( or  Your concerns are our concerns, and we are always here to partner together to find a solution. All staff members can be reached by email as well, and you should expect to receive a response to your email or phone call within 48 hours.

    Nikea Hurt, Ed. D.

    Proud Principal

  • School-based Communications

We are no longer utilizing robo calls for school messages. Our new, district-wide platform will be text-based and is called "REMIND". Please make sure you are signed up for this service, as this is how LHES and RPS will communicate with you. These communications include events, as well as emergency notifications.

If you have not signed up or if you previously "opted out" of receiving messages from the REMIND system, please follow the steps below for registration. This system will be able to send messages to both parent/caregiver contacts. In the event of an unplanned emergency, we will also be able to provide you with prompt communication.

  • What will happen to Holton's Garden?

Our long term garden supervisor, Susanna Raffenot, will be leaving Holton this year- as her youngest is moving up from 5th grade. Many don't know that Susanna has been the one solely responsible for securing funding for our gardens every year- which has been no small feat. Because this position is now vacant, the PTA and Garden Committee met and decided to scale back our garden expenses.  Mrs. Kate (a.k.a "The Holton Plant Lady") will be working reduced hours in the 21-22 school year and focusing only on the beds by the Hudson House.  Even after COVID, we have enough to get by next year, but know that this is only a short term solution.

Right now, our main priority is to help our sweet little gardens stay afloat- AND to ensure that Mrs. Kate can continue the work she's so passionate about doing with our students.

We have not had many fundraisers this year, as we know it's been anything but normal. Having said that, we feel that the Holton Gardens have deeply enriched the lives of our students- and that of the the community- so we are asking if you would consider making a contribution as the end of the year approaches.  This will help us get back on our feet in the Fall (yes, we're still planning to host a Harvest Festival this November!) and buy us a little more time to find someone who can follow in Susanna's footsteps.

  • RPS Direct Update - September 24, 2021

Dear #RPSStrong Family, Happy Fall Friday! Tonight's updates: Richmond Virtual Academy (RVA) Waitlist Update – Please note the following: By next Friday, October 1, we will notify all preschool-5th grade families of their status – whether offered a seat or not – via the email address they used to register their student/s on the waitlist. In the interest of fairness, we are using a randomized selection process to identify students for the limited number of available seats. As I shared last week, there are unfortunately no more virtual seats for middle and high school students. Any family who is already enrolled in virtual can switch to in-person at any time by completing the Switch Pathways Form (Formulario de Cambio de Decisión).
