RPS Celebrates Read Across America Day and One Richmond, One Book
From Read Across America Day to One Richmond, One Book, RPS schools have been busy celebrating the joy and love of reading.
This month, elementary students throughout the district are participating in Virginia Reads One Book and One Richmond, One Book by reading “Cleo Edison Oliver: Playground Millionaire”. Joining over 60,0000 elementary students from across the state, students received their own copies of the book to keep, take home and read with their families. The program also kicked off with assemblies attended by local business and community leaders. Students at Reid Elementary hosted former NFL and University of Richmond football player Tim Hightower and Councilman Michael Jones.
To commemorate Read Across America day, community members and local leaders visited schools and engaged in different literacy activities with students. Fifth graders at Overby-Sheppard Elementary School welcomed Senator Jennifer McClellan and Mayor Levar Stoney, while Superintendent Jason Kamras visited Holton Elementary to discuss themes of teamwork and resilience through Kwame Alexander’s, “The Playbook”.
Middle schools also joined in on the celebration. Boushall Middle School students traveled to George Washington University to meet Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. During their visit, Justice Sotomayor shared messages of inspiration and told students to never give up on their dreams. She presented each student with copies of her books and stressed the importance of reading.
At the high school level, John Marshall High School hosted their first annual “Read Across JM Day”, bringing together staff, students and community members to share in the joy of reading. Members of the varsity basketball team enthralled elementary students with animated Dr. Seuss stories followed by comprehension and vocabulary activities.
