STEM @ UVa ~ 4/5 & 4/6 ~ Juntos Podomos

My name is Kathryn Gimeno and I am the Community Outreach Officer for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)  at the University of Virginia. I am emailing regarding our SHPE chapter’s annual community outreach event called Juntos Podemos. This is a high school visitation event in which we look to engage students in the STEM field by providing them with various engineering activities to participate in  and preparing them for a higher education. We hope you will share this unique opportunity with your students.

Juntos Podemos is completely cost free. Food, transportation, and a place to stay are all provided by SHPE at UVA. We would greatly appreciate if you could help our chapter by sharing the event amongst your students! The application closes March 22nd. It can be found both on our Facebook Page and the direct link, Juntos Podemos Application 2019. A flyer and FAQ’s are at the bottom of this email.

This year, Juntos Podemos will be from Friday,  April 5th to Saturday, April 6th. The program intentionally coincides with University of Virginia’s Engineering Open House during which students will have the opportunity to tour the School of Engineering and Applied Science and engage with multiple students and professors on grounds. Amongst the lab and campus tours that we currently have planned, we will also be conducting an engineering activity, delivering a panel on how to navigate the financial aid system, hosting a candid student panel, and enjoying several student organization performances such as a capella, improv comedy, and dance groups. Overall, our goal as a chapter is to provide students to an immersive college experience and show them the various ways there are to pursue a higher education along with the opportunities that come with it.

Juntos Podemos welcomes ALL students. Women, minorities, LBGTQ, and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. You do not have to be Hispanic to apply.

If you, or any students, have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me! I have also attached a flyer for distribution and a frequently asked questions page with more information!

Best Regards,

Kathryn Gimeno
