On January 31, some of our students from John Marshall High School dance and history classes experienced a workshop class on Body Percussion provided by the dancers from the Dorrance Dance Company. The group is an award-winning tap dance company based in New York City. Dorrance Dance was founded in 2011 with the goal of honoring tap dance's unique history in new, dynamic, and compelling ways.
The workshop was followed by an invitation to watch the entire dance company perform at the Modlin Theater at University of Richmond on February 2nd. The performance enlightened students about the history of tap dance in America.
"It was an amazing experience, packed with so much enrichment, history, and connections in the arts and history combined!" said Melissa Perez-Obregon, JMHS dance and special education teacher. She also serves as the Educational Director of the Latin Ballet of Virginia, and teaches for RPS afterschool programs. "Students are still talking about the experience this week!" added Perez-Obregon.
