7th Grader Wins Statewide "If I Were Mayor" Essay Contest

Jalia Hardy, an outstanding 7th grade student at Binford, has been named the statewide winner of the Virgina Municipal League's "If I Were Mayor" Essay Contest. More than 1,000 students from across Virginia entered the contest. After being named the regional winner, Miss Hardy's essay was determined to be the best of the best. She will receive a plaque and a $250 prize, and a VML photographer visited the school for a photoshoot with Miss Hardy on March 9.

In her award-winning essay, she explained the role of a mayor and focused on how she would use the position to expand arts integration into education, create more afterschool opportunities for children, and create a Kindness Week that would connect residents and spread love through the community.
