Richmond Alternative School Celebrates Opening of Loads of Love Laundry Center
Richmond Alternative School hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of their new laundry center, courtesy of the Redskins Charitable Foundation’s Loads of Love grant.
Founded by Nick Sundberg of the Washington Redskins, the Loads of Love program aims to install laundry facilities in schools and non-profit organizations to directly impact children experiencing homelessness or unstable living situations. The goal of the program is to remove a barrier for attendance and participation in programs and sports by providing students with a discreet solution to the challenge of having clean clothes, at no cost to them or their families.
"Everyday issues, like not having clean clothes, can get in the way of attending and achieving in
school,” said Erika Schmale, McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Specialist. “The laundry
room is a small way to show RPS families and students that we see them and care about them"
Richmond Alternative School celebrated the opening of the laundry center with students, staff and parents and the completion of the first load of laundry by one of their families.
The laundry center is operated five days a week and will support families of Richmond Alternative School and McKinney-Vento. Parents of Richmond Alternative School students canbcontact their office to schedule an appointment, while families supported by McKinney-Vento can access the center by reaching out to their parent liaisons.
In addition to the laundry facility, Richmond Alternative school recently transformed their teacher lounge into a parent resource center. The center provides parents and students with access to computers, a library of books, and school supplies.
“The Loads of Love laundry facility and Parent Resource Center were developed to provide extra support to our families,” said Lamont Trotter, Principal of Richmond Alternative School. “We want to create an environment that is welcoming to our community while offering a safe place to wash their clothes.”
