Barack Obama Elementary Student Selected as a Winner for the “Better Future Fund” Essay Contest

Kanye Nelson, a fifth-grade student at Barack Obama Elementary School, has been selected as one of five recipients in Central Virginia for the Better Future Fund essay contest.

The Better Future Fund award is a joint effort by Papa John’s Pizza, WRIC, Virginia529, and Richmond Raceway to provide educational assistance to Richmond families through fun projects that benefit students and teachers.

Impressed by Kanye’s essay about his desire to better his community, representatives from each organization surprised Kanye at his school to present him with a $2,000 College Savings plan from Virginia529, Papa John’s pizza and family tickets to Richmond Raceway’s upcoming Nascar race. Barack Obama Elementary School will also receive $1000 award that can be used towards the 5th grade graduation ceremony or school supplies.

“I am very proud of Kanye,” said Ms. Jennifer Moore, Principal of Barack Obama Elementary School. “He wrote an excellent essay and we’re thrilled that his hard work has been recognized.”
