Principal’s Message

It is a pleasure and an honor to be the principal of Virgie Binford Education Center. My goal as
principal is to ensure that our students receive the very best education possible while with us.
Together, we explore different educational paths, participate in many hands on activities, and
create wonderful memories. Virgie Binford is unique, as we are tasked with understanding and
recognizing that a large number of our students come to us with unresolved emotional, mental
and physical trauma that must be dealt with. Our staff has been trained in trauma informed care
to ensure that students are engaged and taught with kindness and understanding, along with

Upon entering school, all students are given an interest inventory, a home language survey, and a
basic assessment of their reading and mathematical ability. These assessments and documents
allow us to create a snapshot of needs and interests to better drive our students’ education.
Instruction is then based on an individual instructional level. Because all students are different
and each child has a different set of challenges, we also have a full complement of specialized
staff to deal with individual needs. We have a full time reading specialist, four exceptional
education teachers who are dually endorsed; and, we have access to clinicians that provide
insight to our most traumatized students.

Our greatest strength is working with our overaged under credited students. Here we counsel
students and parents to determine if alternative placement is a viable option, upon their return to
a traditional school setting. Our success rate in GED completion, the alternative high school
credential, has increased each year under my leadership. We also work diligently with our long
term students to attain industry credentials. We have 100 % pass rating in both W! SE financial
credentialing and ServSafe Food Handling industry credentialing. We recognize that together we
all achieve more.

We teach to the whole student with a strong belief that your current circumstance does not define
you. I want my students to work hard, make better choices and above all achieve and excel! We
all have a personal mantra; I encourage you to choose one for yourself. My mantra is “Keep
Your Head Up and Your Heart Open!”

Always in Service,
Ta’Neshia Ford
