RPS and VUU Celebrate Scholarship Recipients

On Saturday, 50 Richmond Public School ninth-grade students were awarded full academic scholarships to Virginia Union University (VUU). Joined by RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras, School Board Representatives Cheryl Burke, Felicia Cosby, and Jonathan Young, the students and their families were welcomed into the VUU family and celebrated at an event held in their honor.

“We could not be more thrilled to partner with VUU to provide this life-changing opportunity for our students,” said RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras. “To be able tell our students and their families that, as 9th graders, their college tuition is already taken care of has been incredible. I want to thank Dr. Lucas for his leadership and support. We look forward to collaborating even more with VUU in the coming years.”

The scholarships are part of the VUU’s larger campaign, “VUU is RVA”, to help solidify greater access to academic, economic, medical, and civic support to those who live in the Greater Richmond area. In addition to the scholarships, each student will also receive a mentor from VUU and the division will have access to VUU labs, classrooms, and advisement from professors for educational and professional development.

“This is one great example of how Dreams4RPS is coming alive for our students,” said School Board Chairwoman Dawn Page. “When we are able to build deep partnerships with families and community we can create amazing opportunities, such as the VUU scholarship, for our students.”
