Sikh Association of Central Virginia Awards $20,000 in Scholarships for Vocational Training

During a special ceremony at the Sikh Gurdwara Sacvi, The Sikh Association of Central Virginia (SACVI) awarded 30 Richmonders vocational scholarships.

“We are so appreciative of the generosity of the Sikh Association of Central Virginia,” said RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras. “These vocational scholarships will open doors and create new opportunities for each of the 30 recipients.”

Earlier this year, RPS and SACVI announced a new partnership that provides $20,000 in scholarships to Richmond residents interested in taking Adult Apprenticeship Education courses offered through the Richmond Technical Center.

The Guru Nanak Scholarships for Vocational Training was established by SACVI to commemorate the 550thbirth anniversary of their founder, Guru Nanak Devji, and to carry on his mission of social equality and community support. The Sikh Religion is the world’s fifth-largest monotheistic faith.

“The Sikh Association of Central Virginia is honored and humbled to support the educational program of Richmond Public Schools that enables our adults to be able to develop a skill to earn their livelihood,” said Dr. Bimaljit Singh Sandhu on behalf SACVI. “While making an effort to spread the message of Guru Nanak that all humankind is equal, we have made a gesture to help out the community at large in the Greater Richmond area. We wish and hope to be able to support this program on an ongoing basis to help develop the workforce in our area.”

The awardees can use the scholarship to enroll in courses this fall for trade programs ranging from healthcare to welding, cosmetology, plumbing, and electrical training.

“This is the type of partnership that helps to elevate the entire Richmond community,” said School Board Chair Dawn Page. We thank the Sikh Association of Central Virginia for advancing this generous scholarship program and look forward to future collaborations.”
