- Overby-Sheppard Elementary School
Dear Hive Nation:
Dear Hive Nation:
I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope that you have enjoyed your summer break and taken time to truly enjoy family and friends. The school year is fast approaching and this is always a busy time, but I want to take some time to let you know that I am thrilled to be leading the helm of this wonderful school. I have been inspired by the stories that I have learned about Overby-Sheppard thus far and looking forward to building my own stories and memories with this community.
I have spent the last 18 years in the field of education. From teaching in RPS right out of college to administration in several areas. While I am grateful and proud of the work I have done, I am most proud of Chandler and Thaddeus, my children. They have brought great joy to my husband and me over the years. They have continued to push me in my own pursuits in education. When I think about instruction and classrooms, I want to make sure that all students, including my own, get the very best.
This summer has been a journey working to align curriculum, participate in enriching professional development, and making sure we are ready to welcome your wonderful students. I have to take a minute to reflect and put it all into perspective. I am looking forward to working with the staff, student, parents, and community members that support Overby-Sheppard on a regular basis. There is a rich history here at Overby-Sheppard and I am looking forward to continuing that history of support, compassion, and collaboration in making our school the best place learn and grow. While we are constantly working to make sure we are better for your students, I want to make sure we all embrace the wonderful people and things happening at our school on a daily basis. It is a joy to take a moment to reflect on these things.
With that said, I am excited about the upcoming school year. We have some wonderful things planned and wonderful staff to make it happen. Student achievement and success is one of our main goals. We are prepared with high expectations, an aligned curriculum, and exciting opportunities in store. I ask for your partnership in this endeavor by sending your child to school every day, encouraging your child to read at least 30 minutes a day, monitoring rest and sleep, monitoring school work, actively engaging in a school discussion each night with your child, and communicating with your child’s teacher on a regular basis.
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, for the beginning of school. Remember, school starts at 9:00 am and our doors open at 8:45 am. We will start dismissing at 3:45 pm. Breakfast and lunch will continue to be provided at no cost for all students. We ask that you communicate your child’s dismissal plans with your child’s teacher and remember that dismissal plans will not be changed after 2:00 pm on a daily basis. Any changes should be made with a note or phone call before this time.
Please join us on Thursday, August 29, 2019, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm for our Family Cookout. It will be a time to meet your teacher, run into old friends, and fellowship with new families. We will have different booths or tables to share information and we will have a grand prize drawing at the end of the night for all those families that complete their data forms and other information during this event. We look forward to welcoming you back to school!
We will have a Kindergarten Popsicle Social for our rising kindergarten students on Monday, August 19, 2019, from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Come out and meet the kindergarten team, meet new friends, and get acquainted with Overby-Sheppard.
Again, I look forward to this partnership for an outstanding school year growing your children. Remember, our moto is that we are “Hive Nation: ‘Bee’ing United in Excellence”!
Your partner in education,
Shayla Holeman, Principal
