Generous donations from The Community Foundation and Robins Foundation support the purchase of technology for RPS students
Richmond, VA - More RPS students will now have access to Chromebooks and internet hotspots thanks to generous donations from the Community Foundation and Robins Foundation.
“When schools first closed in March, I shared how critical it would be for our students to have computer and internet access during this time,” said RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras. “The digital divide is an equity issue and it’s going to take all of us coming together to help close this gap. Our partners at the Community Foundation and Robins Foundation took a tremendous step in helping us bridge this divide by providing grants for the purchase of additional technology. We couldn’t be more grateful for their generosity and their commitment to the students of RPS.”
The donations include $500,000 from the Community Foundation and $125,000 from the Robins Foundation. The award from the Community Foundation is composed of $300,000 from the Central Virginia COVID-19 Response Fund (a partnership with other funders and corporations), $100,000 from the REB Foundation and $100,000 from one anonymous Community Foundation donor. In addition to the generous grants already received, another fund at the Community Foundation has issued a new $150,000 challenge to help RPS reach its ultimate $1 million goal by the end of May. With $80,000 secured towards the match so far, there is still time for individuals and businesses to help close the remaining $70,000 gap.
“The Central Virginia COVID-19 Response Fund is a collaborative effort, and the Community Foundation is proud to have joined together with our peers like Dominion Energy and the R.E.B. Foundation to make this grant possible, ensuring that RPS students would have access to learning resources that enable learning from home,” said Sherrie Armstrong, CEO of the Community Foundation. “While our current circumstances elevated the need for Chromebooks, we view this as a longer-term investment in which young people can strengthen their technology skills to thrive and compete in an increasingly digital world.”
The donation from the Robins Foundation is a part of their larger vision to advance the greater Richmond community through strategic partnerships, collaborations and education. RPS has been a strategic partner of the Robins Foundation since 2017 and receives funding support through the RPS Education Foundation.
“For us, this is about partnership. It is about our commitment to children and families in Richmond and creating access and opportunities,“ said Robert Dortch, Jr, Vice President of Programs and Innovations at the Robins Foundation. “This is a perfect way to be able to support the students of RPS, especially during this difficult time.”
“The contributions of these organizations are great examples of just how extraordinary the Richmond community is,” said Linda Owen, School Board Chairwoman. “We thank the Community Foundation and the Robins Foundation for their continued investment in our students.”
