Capital One, Heart of America and Richmond Public Schools Celebrate New Tech Corner for J.H. Blackwell Elementary
On Thursday, May 16, students and staff at J.H. Blackwell Elementary School celebrated the grand opening of their new Technology Corner thanks to a generous grant from Capital One and a partnership with Heart of America.
“We are incredibly grateful to Capital One and Heart of America for their continued partnership,” said RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras. “This is a great example of how our community partners are working with us to advance our strategic plan, Dreams4RPS, as the new Tech Corner not only brings modern systems to our students at Blackwell Elementary School, but it also brings additional tools to engage them in exciting and rigorous teaching and learning."
Heart of America, a national non-profit focused on transforming spaces into modern learning environments, partnered with Capital One to create a state-of-the-art technology center at J.H. Blackwell Elementary School. The center features student Chromebooks, as well as a new layout, design, and furniture to foster collaborative learning. The new center will provide on-demand access to software and tools, empowering students to develop the skills needed to succeed in our increasingly digital economy.
“I am thrilled to see this project come together and I know our partnership with Capital One and Heart of America will mean great things for our students,” said RPS School Board Chair Dawn Page. “This new Tech Corner will provide greater accessibility for our students and make Blackwell Elementary a more joyful place for our students to continue to learn and grow together.”
Volunteers completed the new Technology Corner by assembling furniture, installing technology, and facilitated games of Financial Jeopardy with students during the day. The event culminated with an official ribbon cutting ceremony and remarks from Chief Engagement Officer Dr. Shadae Harris, Virginia Senator Rosalyn Dance, and representatives from Capital One and Heart of America.
“Access to advanced computer equipment and digital technology is critical to unlocking the imaginations and vast potentials of our children,” said Senator Rosalyn Dance. “Thanks to the continual hard work and leadership of teachers and staff, as well as the generous support of corporate and community partners like Capital One and Heart of America, Blackwell Elementary and Richmond Public Schools are moving in the direction towards ensuring that all students have a chance to reach their ultimate potential."
The project was funded by Capital One Future Edge Initiative, a program dedicated to making a difference in communities by investing in programs that help people gain the skills necessary to succeed in the digital age.
“This Technology Corner is just one of the many ways Capital One is supporting digital fluency through their Future Edge Initiative,” said Colleen Noland, Vice President of Programs with the Heart of America Foundation. “This infusion of technology and resources will provide new pathways for current and future students of Blackwell Elementary to learn and grow.”
