RPS Launches RPS en Español

Richmond Public Schools is proud to announce RPS en Español, a new initiative to inform, empower, and share information and resources with our growing Spanish- speaking community.

In RPS and in the City of Richmond, Spanish is the second most prevalent language spoken after English. 95% of English Learners (EL) in RPS speak Spanish as the primary language in their homes. RPS en Español will provide content in Spanish that covers RPS events and activities and highlights community organizations and individuals supporting our Spanish-speaking families.

RPS en Español will include a new Facebook page that is entirely in Spanish. The RPS en Español Facebook platform will provide families with the opportunity to communicate directly with staff from the Welcome Center, receive updates on upcoming RPS events and activities, and learn more about school and community resources.

“It is imperative that we meet families where they are and equip them with information, resources, and access so that they are set up for success at RPS,” said Dr. Shadae Harris, RPS Chief Engagement Officer. “This will help us to eliminate some of the many barriers that our newcomer families face when seeking the support they need for their students to be successful.”

The RPS website will also incorporate RPS en Español and house important information in Spanish that can be easily accessed by our Spanish-speaking families.

The launch of RPS en Español comes on the heels of the grand opening of the satellite Welcome Center at Boushall Middle School earlier this year.

Created in 2016, the original Welcome Center is often the first place that newcomer families visit when seeking information on how to successfully navigate a complex school system. Now serving more than 1,000 families, the Welcome Center offers registration and family support, assessments and transcript evaluation, and language support services. In alignment with Dreams4RPS, RPS has doubled the capacity of the Welcome Center, adding a coordinator and specialist to lead the Center’s initiatives.

The satellite Welcome Center at Boushall Middle School offers the same services of registration, English Language proficiency assessment (WIDA Screener), and family supports to all families. Both Welcome Centers are working closely with our Instructional team to ensure all students are assessed and properly identified in a timely manner to receive English as a Second Language (ESL) programming and supports at school.

“We are a school system for all children and all families and we want to make sure that we are serving all children and all families as best as we possibly can,” said Superintendent Jason Kamras. “We know that we have a lot of work to do in this area and we are committed to working hand-in-hand with our Spanish-speaking communities to ensure that even more families receive the guidance and support they need to successfully navigate RPS.”
