Dear Viking Community,

My name is Tamara Mines and it is my honor and privilege to introduce myself as the new principal of Thomas Jefferson High School. The opportunity to join this amazing school community is both exciting and humbling.  My 17 years of educational experience as a teacher, coach, coordinator, assistant principal and principal has prepared me for this moment in my career.  In each of my roles, I have sought to ensure a safe and positive educational environment that engages and embraces the diversity of all learners.  I am extremely proud to bring my knowledge, leadership, and passion for working with students back home to Richmond Public Schools.

I believe that a well-rounded education is born out of outstanding instruction from the best teachers who work to develop positive relationships with students.  It is also essential for students to have opportunities beyond the classroom to help develop them into citizens who will become leaders in our ever-changing world.  As principal of TJHS I will be committed to creating and cultivating a positive educational environment that is responsive to the diverse learners through inclusive curriculum and instructional design.

My passion to provide students with the best quality education is built around the premise of making decisions that put the best interest of students first.  As we begin our journey together, I am reminded of the African proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child”.  This proverb seems most appropriate as I think about the strength, commitment, and dedication of the Thomas Jefferson community to student excellence.  I am committed to collaboratively seeking new ways to meet the needs of all of our students and to more effectively communicating with all of our stakeholders.

Creating this culture of excellence and inclusion will not be possible without the collaboration of all stakeholders.  Over the next few, I will publish dates and times of opportunities to get to know you, students and staff of TJ, and our community partners to learn about the richness of history, core values, traditions and dreams for our school.

Tamara Mines,
