Open Enrollment
Richmond Public Schools' lottery process, open enrollment, offers school choice for students who want to attend a school outside of their residential zone. This includes all elementary schools, all middle schools (except for Franklin Military Academy), the STEM Academies at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School and Thomas Henderson Middle School (rising 6th graders may select the STEM academies as open enrollment choices), and the RPS comprehensive high schools - Armstrong High School, Huguenot High School, John Marshall High School, George Wythe High School, and Thomas Jefferson High School. New this year is the option to apply to Richmond Virtual Academy as one of your open enrollment choices.
Students may apply to up to three out-of-zone schools via our online system Enroll RPS (www.attendrvaschools.com). Seat offers are determined via a random lottery that is run each spring.
Students in elementary grades may also apply to the Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts lottery as an additional fourth option. Open enrollment seats vary by school and grade depending upon school capacity, staff, and in-zone enrollment. Transportation is not provided through open enrollment.
The application window for open enrollment for the 2023-2024 application cycle opens Friday, October 14, 2022, and closes on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 4:30 PM.
