General Description:

The Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction will assist the Director with the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of curriculum and instructional practices within Richmond City Public Schools. Primarily, the Associate Director will lead the reimagining of the student experience, via “Passion4Learning”, as outlined in RPS’s Dreams4RPS. The Associate Director will serve in a highly cross-functional and collaborative manner, leading a team to develop innovative curriculum design, instructional models and professional learning opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides instructional leadership and supervision for Curriculum and Instruction programming within Richmond City Public Schools
  • Leads cross-functional teams for the instructional design and planning of “Passion4Learing” pilots as outlined in the Dreams4RPS strategic plan; works with division leaders to outline the multi-year path towards “Passion4Learning” efforts
  • Leads and manages the division’s framework and multi-year plans for designing, sharing and use of cohesive and high-quality instructional resources that enable standards-aligned high-quality instruction (collaborates with content-specific instructional specialists)
  • Provides assistance with curriculum implementation, material selection, and provides feedback to instructional staff and building administration
  • Designs, plans, and evaluates tools and protocols to enable high-quality, curriculum-embedded professional learning for leaders and teachers, ensuring coherent practices across content areas
  • Assists the Director in developing budgets and staffing projections
  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, and assignments of staff within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction
  • Manages, develops and evaluates staff as assigned
  • Assists in developing, implementing and monitoring procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned 


  • Master’s degree
  • Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in administration/supervision (or the ability to obtain such endorsement within 6 months of hire)
  • At least five years of successful teaching experience in one of the four core content areas (English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or History/Social Science)
  • At least three years managing and leading others; ability to provide guidance and direction to staff and promote a team environment
  • Ability to provide division-level leadership in curriculum, pacing, and resources to support classroom instruction with a deep understanding of the progression of the knowledge, skills, and processes of education as defined in the Virginia Standards of Learning
  • Knowledge of curriculum/curricular design, evidenced-based programming, high quality instruction, and student engagement practices
  • Knowledge and demonstrated interest in myriad models of schools, classroom instruction and partnerships that generate demonstrable results for students; demonstrated ability to apply fundamental research skills to instructional design projects
  • Ability to design, coordinate and execute innovative, outcome-based professional development for leaders and teachers that leads to improved instructional practice
  • Ability to communicate and work in a collaborative and cooperative manner with diverse groups in the school and community
  • Highly inquisitive and action-oriented; embraces and operates with a balance of innovation and pragmatism
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and synthesize diverse information
  • Works well in a fast-paced environment; demonstrates flexibility and adaptability with a sense of urgency
