General Description:

The Chief Student Wellness Officer creates and executes a vision to ensure the emotional, mental, and physical health of all RPS students. Programmatically, this Chief’s portfolio includes work streams related to social-emotional learning, trauma-informed practices, restorative practices, mindfulness, social work, school culture and climate, suspension reduction, nursing, food and nutrition, and athletics. The Chief is directly responsible for two of the division’s 10 key goals: reduction in suspensions and increase in student satisfaction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with key stakeholders:

o   Develops, implements, and maintains a vision to ensure the mental and emotional health of students, ensuring an  emphasis on students’ development of five key social-emotional competencies: self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision-making

o   Develops, implements, and maintains a vision for the physical health of students that prioritizes innovative approaches to school meals, with an emphasis on nutritional value and student satisfaction, enhanced nursing services, and an expansion of the division’s athletic program to provide a comprehensive and competitive set of team and individual sports for all high school and middle school students

  • Manages and evaluates key divisional leaders and school-based personnel who are responsible for the implementation of this work
  • Communicates and explains the vision for the emotional, physical, and mental health of students to staff, families, and the public, working cooperatively with external partners to advance the work and effectively respond to parent and community concerns
  • Provides leadership in support of the superintendent and school division for the development, promotion, and implementation of the division’s goals and objectives including resolving problems and making final decisions pertinent to the operation of the school, school programs, and assigned departments, ensuring schools’ adherence to school board policies and regulations and to State and Federal rules and regulations, overseeing organizational development and management for assigned schools and departments and developing a budget for assigned departments
  • Participates in system-wide policy development as a member of the Superintendent’s Leadership Team


  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in education, education policy, or related area; Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or related area preferred
  • Virginia postgraduate certificate in Administration and Supervision
  • At least seven years of experience, preferably in an educational setting, with responsibilities including team management, project management, mental/emotional/physical health programming for children, and community outreach and engagement
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to track intricate details and prioritize multiple initiatives and timelines in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school leaders and staff, program administrators, parents/caregivers, and families
  • Authentic, effective, and professional communication style including the ability to communicate effectively in person and by email and phone
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred
