Lead Equipment Operator

POSITION TITLE: Lead Equipment Operator

QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or its equivalency and at least two years of experience operating trucks or light construction and maintenance equipment or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Excellent leadership and management skills required. Must have good knowledge of the care and safe operation of trucks and light construction and of the state laws pertaining to their safe operation. Must have a good knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions and ability to take safety precautions. Must be able to work in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions. Ability to effectively supervise skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled employees. Must be skilled in the use of tools, equipment and materials pertinent to the trade. Ability to think through emerging crises quickly and to make independent decisions. Must be able to perform routine clerical tasks and arithmetical computations. Note: Applicant may be required to demonstrate skill level by completing a performance test. Necessary Special Requirement: Must have a valid Virginia motor vehicle operator’s license with a satisfactory record.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: Provides supervisory assistance to the Grounds Foreman which includes the Heavy Equipment Operator, Equipment Operator, Labor Trades Crew Leaders, Grounds Maintenance Worker and Auto Mechanic and during the Grounds Supervisor absent take on the role as the lead supervisor. Drives medium weight single axle chassis trucks hauling equipment, playground maintenance supplies and other light loads. Operates large pavement roller and jack hammer and snow plows as required. Installs and maintains chain link fencing. Operates other types of landscaping and yard maintenance equipment. Makes repairs to blacktop and playground equipment. Plans and coordinates the schedule for grounds maintenance program and provides guidance for the maintenance of lawns, trees and shrubs. Responds to a variety of inclement weather emergencies in accordance with standard practices and analyze and evaluates the situation to determine the appropriate decision. Performs other related duties as assigned.

OTHER INFORMATION: Performs semiskilled work in the operation of a truck and other motorized construction and maintenance equipment and does other related work as required. Work is performed under little supervision. Work requires the exertion of 35-50 pounds of force constantly and 50-75 pounds or more of force frequently to move objects load and unload materials, supplies and property. Work requires frequent climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and feeling. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines. Observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.

PAY SCHEDULE: Unified Pay Schedule, Pay Grade 110

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 260 Days (12 months)
