General Description:
The 1:1 Student Nurse provides one to one health care services (from routine to complex medical situations within standard practice) to designated students with special needs as outlined within the student’s IEP and individualized health care plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Provides direct one to one nursing services to students

·         Performs routine and emergency care as outlined within the student’s care plan per order provided by a licensed healthcare provider and within RPS guidelines

·         Ensures adequate medications and supplies are maintained in the school clinic and/or the student’s “go bag”

·         Documents procedures accordingly and communicates with student’s caregivers and school health services as needed

·         Conducts medical case findings, screenings, and referral activities related to health defects of selected students; observes students on a regular basis to determine health needs

·         Adheres to all HIPAA/FEPRA guidelines

·         Implements Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases

·         Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures

·         Works collaboratively with the school  nurse, as needed

·         Provides school clinic coverage, as needed

·         Performs other related duties as assigned


·         Valid license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia

·         Valid CPR certification (BLS Adult and Pediatric, First-Aid and AED)

·         Ability to lift up to 150 pounds

·         Excellent communication skills (oral and written)

·         Ability to work effectively with students, families, teachers, and school administrators

·         Comprehensive knowledge of the coordination of health care service delivery, related service providers, and community agencies, and other resource providers; understanding of public school nursing procedures and policies preferred

·         Ability to adapt to changing priorities and effectively handle multiple assignments

·         Ability to work independently with minimal on-site supervision

·         Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation

·         Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet, and email applications preferred

·         Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred
