Open Enrollment

Open enrollment offers school choice for students who want to attend a school outside of their residential zone that does not require a formal application process for admission. Placement is determined through a lottery process, and the number of available seats may vary from year to year based on enrollment projections.
This includes:

  • All elementary schools including Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts (K-5).
  • All middle schools except for Franklin Military Academy.
  • The STEM Academies at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School and Thomas Henderson Middle School (rising 6th graders may select the STEM academies as open enrollment choices).
  • The RPS comprehensive high schools - Armstrong High School, Huguenot High School, John Marshall High School, Richmond High School for the Arts, and Thomas Jefferson High School.
  • The Richmond Virtual Academy (RVA), RPS's virtual school serving grades K-12.
  • The Governor's STEM Academy for Career and Technical Education (CTE) at Richmond Technical Center (in previous years this program has followed the specialty school selection process)
  • The Richmond Career Education & Employment Academy (RCEEA) for students grades 9-12

Students may apply to up to three out-of-zone schools. Students in elementary grades may also apply to the Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts as an additional fourth option.

Transportation is not provided through open enrollment.

If you are unsure about your new school zone, use our School Locator Map. Also available en Español.

The application period for selective admission schools, programs, regional governor's schools and for admission to an out-of-zone school through our annual open enrollment process for the 2026-27 school year is closed.

The school application results for the 2026-27 school year will be available on Friday, March 6, 2026. To view the results, please log in to your parent account at https://enrollrps.schoolmint.com.
