Whether your child is beginning preschool or kindergarten, transferring from another school, returning to our division, or exploring our robust specialty school offerings, we are here to guide you through every step of the enrollment process. Our schools offer safe and nurturing environments where students are encouraged to explore their interests, build meaningful relationships, and achieve their full potential.

Preschool & Kindergarten

K-12 Student Enrollment

  • For students enrolling in their zoned school, enrollment for the next school year opens in spring for all new students. Check out the School Locator Map if you are unsure of your zoned school. 

    All families must open a SchoolMint account when enrolling in RPS for the first time.

    Most families are not required to re-enroll, but if you are moving to a new school zone, you must provide two proofs of residency to your new school. The exception is if you have attended an RPS school for preschool and are moving to kindergarten; in that case, you must complete a separate enrollment for kindergarten.

  • RPS offers high-quality preschool seats through Head Start and the Virginia Preschool Initiative to eligible children who turn 3 or 4 years old by September 30. Applications open in the spring of the year prior. A child’s offered location is determined by a number of factors, including their proximity to the school and the number of available seats. 

    All families must open a SchoolMint account when enrolling in RPS for the first time.

  • During their eighth grade year, RPS students are invited to apply to selective admissions and governors’ schools. These schools offer a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, and require a separate application, including an interview and an essay. The RPS Enrollment team does several informational sessions in the fall of every year. The applications are due in December of every school year. 

    Schools that require an application include:

    • Open High School (RPS)
    • Community High School (RPS)
    • Franklin Military Academy (RPS)
    • CodeRVA (Governor’s School)
    • Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School
    • Appomattox Regional Regional Governor’s School

  • If a family wishes to attend a K-12 school that is not their zoned school, they do so through our Open Enrollment process. Open enrollment applies to the following schools: 

    • All elementary schools, including Patrick Henry School of Science and the Arts
    • All middle schools with the exception of Franklin Military Academy 
    • The RPS comprehensive high schools (Armstrong, Huguenot, John Marshall, and Richmond High School for the Arts)
    • Specialty programs like the STEM Academies at MLK and Henderson middle schools, the Governor’s STEM Academy for CTE, and the Richmond Career Education & Employment Academy (RCEEA).

Before You Start Enrollment

All families enrolling a student need to upload several documents to SchoolMint as part of the enrollment process. Please read carefully and email enroll@rvaschools.net if you have any questions. 

First, you will need to present two proofs of residency. These may include (according to Virginia law): 

  • U.S. or Virginia income tax return from the previous year;
  • U.S. Internal Revenue Service tax reporting W-2 form from the current year or its equivalent;
  • Deed or lease agreement to the residence;
  • Mortgage bill for the residence;
  • Voter registration card;
  • Receipt for personal property taxes paid within the last year;
  • And/or a payroll check or payroll stub issued by an employer within the last three months

A driver’s license or utility bill can be substituted as a proof of residency in conjunction with a lease/deed or mortgage bill only. 

For preschool only, proof of income is required. 

Every family will also need to upload: 

  • A birth certificate
  • A health information (including a recent physical for students in PK-5th grade)
  • An IEP (if applicable) during enrollment. 

Please note that Richmond Public Schools does not share any information about students, including country of birth, with anyone else.
