How to Register: Registration forms for K-12 and preschool are available online at Enroll RPS. All families must complete an online registration form when enrolling with RPS for the first time.
Find Your Zone School: All students are required to register at their zone school unless they have received a seat through Open Enrollment for an out-of-zone school. Not sure what your zone school is? Check out the School Locator Map if you are unsure which school you are zoned to.
2027-2028 Registration: For students enrolling in their zoned school, enrollment for the 2027-2028 school year opens in spring 2027 for all new students.

RPS offers high-quality preschool seats through Head Start and the Virginia Preschool Initiative to eligible children who turn 3 or 4 years old by September 30. Applications open in the spring of the year prior. A child’s offered location is determined by a number of factors, including their proximity to the school and the number of available seats.
All families must create a parent account at Enroll RPS when applying for preschool or enrolling in RPS for the first time.

School applications for the 2027-2028 school year will be available between October 1, 2026 – December 4, 2026 at 4:30pm on the Enroll RPS website.
Initial offers will be posted on March 5, 2027.
Eligible students are invited to apply to selective admissions and governors’ schools. These schools offer a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, and require a separate application, including an interview and an essay. The RPS Enrollment team does several informational sessions in the fall of every year. The applications are due in December of every school year.
Schools that require an application include:
- Open High School (RPS)
- Community High School (RPS)
- Franklin Military Academy (RPS)
- CodeRVA (Regional School)
- Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School
- Appomattox Regional Governor’s School
- Passion4Learning – CREATE at Richmond High School for the Arts (RPS)

Open Enrollment applications for the 2027-2028 school year will be available between October 1, 2026 – January 31, 2027 at 4:30pm on the Enroll RPS website.
Seat results will be posted on March 5, 2027.
Families who wish to attend a K-12 school that is not their zoned school, may apply to other RPS schools through our Open Enrollment process. Transportation is not provided to students attending a school via Open Enrollment except for Patrick Henry School of Science and the Arts.
Open Enrollment applies to the following schools:
- All elementary schools, including Patrick Henry School of Science and the Arts
- All middle schools with the exception of Franklin Military Academy
- The RPS comprehensive high schools (Armstrong, Huguenot, John Marshall, Richmond High School for the Arts and Thomas Jefferson)
- The following programs are also available: Governor's STEM Academy for CTE (GSA), Richmond Career Education & Employment Academy (RCEEA).

Already an RPS student and moved within the city? Here’s how to transfer schools:
- Submit Proof of Residency: Bring your new lease, deed, or mortgage statement to either your current or new school.
- Processing: Student records will be transferred to the new school within 1-3 business days.

Moved to a county, state, or other program outside of RPS? Contact your current RPS school and request a withdrawal form.
Before You Start Enrollment
All families enrolling a student need to upload several documents to Enroll RPS as part of the enrollment process. Please read carefully and email enrollrps@rvaschools.net if you have any questions.
First, you will need to present two proofs of residency. You may choose two of the following:
- U.S. or Virginia income tax return from the previous year;
- U.S. Internal Revenue Service tax reporting W-2 form from the current year or its equivalent;
- Deed or lease agreement to the residence;
- Mortgage bill for the residence;
- Voter registration card;
- Receipt for personal property taxes paid within the last year;
- And/or a payroll check or payroll stub issued by an employer within the last three months
If you are using a deed, lease, or mortgage statement, you may provide a driver's license or a utility bill as your second document.
If you need to use documents in the name of someone other than the child's parent or guardian, please complete and upload the Shared Housing Form, which can be found at the bottom of this page.
For preschool only, proof of income is required.
Every family will also need to upload:
- A birth certificate
- A health information (including a recent physical for students in PK-5th grade)
- An IEP (if applicable) during enrollment.
Please note that Richmond Public Schools does not share any information about students, including country of birth, with anyone else.
