About RPS

Richmond Public Schools proudly serves 22,000 students and their families. Learn about what we do — and why we do it.

RPS is one of the 100 largest school divisions in the United States. Across 53 school campuses, we serve a diverse community where approximately 60% of students are Black, 25% are Hispanic or Latino — our fastest-growing student population — and 10% are White.

We’ve increased our K-2 reading proficiency by 7 percentage points, meaning we’re now ABOVE pre-pandemic levels

In fall 2024, we were up on EVERY SINGLE SOL, and we grew faster than the state as a whole on four out of five subjects

We increased our graduation rate by 6 percentage points, including an increase of 18 percent of our English Learner Students

Over the last two years, we increased the number of accredited schools by 8 — more than any other school division in the Commonwealth

These are big goals, but we are reaching them! RPS is undeniably on the rise. From early-literacy rates well ahead of our pre-pandemic levels to chronic absenteeism rates falling faster than major divisions around the country, on nearly every indicator, RPS is improving faster than peer districts.

Our mission is simple, high, and clear: We want every RPS student to graduate with the tools and knowledge to live a life of their own determination. We’re guided by our strategic plan, and remain laser focused on our three goals:
